I discovered Healing Touch by pure accident, or sheer synchronicity or, most likely, from a miraculous answer to my prayers.

The Kasemirs, 1993

In 1993, after ten years of being a stay-at-home mom, when my daughter started school,  I decided to return to nursing.  I wanted a position that would allow me to be with the patient one on one, to give attentive, compassionate and genuine nursing à la Florence Nightingale.  Home Care sounded just like what I needed to pursue.  So I had to go through the hoops of  reactivating my RN license.   Out of the blue,  I came across  the Red Rocks Community College schedule for the RN continuing education classes, which included the complete curriculum for the Holistic Nursing Certificate.

Holism was a new concept at that time, but all the classes fascinated me.  During the first semester, I took an “Introduction to Therapeutic Touch”, which I thought was a type of psychology class to learn to relate to our patients.  The teacher, Janet Mentgen – which I found out later was the founder of the Healing Touch Program,  after presenting some philosophical concepts, had us do a few exercises to feel our own energy field and the field of some of the other students. You can imagine my amazement when  I felt an odd resistance between my own palms.  I also felt some tingling over five areas of the body of  my first ‘client’; at each place she had a story to tell about an old injury, surgeries and present health issues.  Wow!

This was an epiphany!  I  had never heard of energy work before that instance, let alone  feel it in my hands while they were scanning above the body of a perfect stranger.  To learn later in the class, that with a loving heart and a compassionate intention, anyone can apply the HT techniques on themselves and others to support the self-healing process. Healing Touch affects the whole person at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. I could not have found a model of nursing more appropriate to my needs.

With this new discover, the message was loud and clear in my mind: I needed to teach this material to everyone I met and give Healing Touch to anybody who would let me practice on them.  I became fearless even though I had never taught a class in my life and I had never offered such an ‘intriguing’ practice to family, friends and strangers.  This was a new perception on healing and health maintenance – the answer to my prayer to help people in a kind, gentle, non invasive and compassionate way.

Self care is essential  for a HT provider.  A healthy lifestyle where the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects are nurtured, helps to maintain a vibration level optimal to help ourselves and others to heal.  In fact, the universal energy does the work; the practitioner is the facilitator.  In a session, as the energy comes through the practitioner first, he/she also benefits from giving HT.

So, to the question “Can I learn Healing Touch?”, the answer is YES!

Anyone with an open mind and heart, interested in natural self-healing and in helping others, is welcome to take classes in HT.  The workshops were developed for people from all walks of life and levels of education; for professionals in the health fields as well as lay people interested in deepening their knowledge of energy work.

We all have the innate power to heal; we just need to be reminded.  Believing that we are beings that have dimensions beyond the thickness of our skin is not necessary to benefit from a session,  but it facilitates the work.

Healing Touch is an accredited therapy.  When health issues surface, that are beyond their Scope of Practice, the practitioners refer to appropriate resources. They also offer to cooperate with medical providers to complement standard medicine. HT is about reestablishing balance and harmony in the human energy system; it is about Love and Light from above.

As a reminder, the Center for Integrative Medicine (CIM), located on the second floor of the Cancer Center, has a fabulous team to support you in health and healing with massage therapy, acupuncture, nutrition counseling, many classes and of course Healing Touch Therapy.

I completed the Holistic Nursing Certificate and the Certification through the American Holistic Nurses Association and at the same time, since HT is very holistic in nature, the Healing Touch Practitioner and Instructor Certifications with the Healing Touch Program.  Even though I have been practicing HT for twenty two years, I am still in awe to see people wake up from their session, smiling and sharing what they experienced, how relaxed they are, how their pain is so much less than when they arrived (a drop of  1 to 7 on a 0-10 pain scale), how their nausea and neuropathy after chemo or radiation therapy are reduced and how at peace they feel. Each story is unique.

The only requirement to take a HT class is “A strong commitment to personal growth and knowledge of holistic health principles” HTP.
