This week’s article is brought to us by Healing Touch practitioner and instructor, Nicole Kasemir, RN, HNC, BA.
What is Healing Touch?
Healing Touch (HT), “is an energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health” (HealingTouchProgram.com).
In this holistic modality, the practitioners “influence the human energy system, specifically the energy field that surrounds the body (the biofield), and the energy centers that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body”. By using non-invasive HT techniques “to clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields”, the practitioners affect the whole person in a positive way, setting the stage for self-healing and for the maintenance of wellness – a state of balance and harmony between the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and relationships levels.
Jean Watson, nursing theorist, see HT as the embodiment of her Caritas theory; her 10 processes intermesh beautifully with HTP Principles. “Thus there is a convergence between Caritas Nursing and Healing Touch in that they both work from an energetic framework of Universal Love as the basis for all healing and all healing-caring relationships.” (Watson 1999, 2005 – HT Level 1 Notebook, 2012).
Even though we embrace the mystery of the healing process, an array of research support that there is an exchange of energy between the client and the practitioner during a ‘healing’ session. James Oschman (Energy Medicine, The Scientific Basis, 2001) measured the energy emanating from the hand of the practitioners. The range of frequencies varied from 0.3 to 30 Hz, which covers the spectrum of electrical currents used in energy medicine to accelerate the healing of different tissues, organs and systems of the body. Truly, the human energy, moved with unconditional love, is more gentle and compassionate than electric shocks generated by machines. Since subtle energy work affects the body at the cellular level as well as at the other levels, we see a positive outcome for most conditions, for people of all ages. Including my own self-healing, I have worked extensively with cancer patients, stress, low back pain and much more. I am always in awe to witness the benefits of HT.
What does a HT session looks like? The HTCPs follow a sequence of 7 to10 steps: Intake, practitioners’ preparation, pre- and post-treatment assessment of the energy system (sensations/disturbances felt in the field of the client are cues to where the blockages may be). Mutual goals and intension for the session. With the clients lying down on a treatment table, practitioners apply appropriate HT techniques – following our training and inner guidance, to clear, balance and energize the biofield and open the energy centers. When the process is complete, we wake up the clients; they usually smile and give positive feedback, like “WOW”, “It felt great”, “I felt a shift…movement”; the pain and anxiety are substantially diminished (using scale 0 to 10). Lastly, a plan for self-care is discussed. The HT practitioner is there as a guide; the healing is self-healing, affected by the readiness of the client…and a heart-centered practitioner.
And what a joyful time for Healing Touch Certified Practitioners (HTCP) across the country! After many years of hard work, Healing Touch Program and the Certification board just announced that they have successfully obtained the accreditation for their graduates (HTCP) through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA):
“This is a huge milestone … to have our profession and credential recognized as a professional occupation from a body that accredits esteemed programs such as American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), … National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, and many more.”
“It not only affirms that Healing Touch Certified Practitioners have achieved the skills, knowledge, and ability to deliver a consistent and reliable quality of service in Healing Touch, but also clearly establishes within mainstream health care that HTCPs are the leaders in the Energy Medicine. Healing Touch Program Certified Practitioners are the only Energy Medicine practitioners with an accredited credential in the health care field.”
“This latest accreditation (our first one was with ANCC in March 2011) will impact the health care industry in potent ways – Energy Medicine is what is needed to bring more gentleness, effectiveness, holistic and affordable care to all people!”
So yes, I am very proud to be part of this process, honored to teach the Level 1 (2 and 3) of the HTP Certification and to offer Healing Touch therapy to in-patients, out-patients and to the staff at EGSMC since 2005.
